The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, or OPRHP, minds the state's public lands. It oversees more than 175 state parks and some 35 state historic sites, as well as related public recreation areas such as golf courses, beaches, marinas, nature centers, cabins and campsites, and more than 1,350 miles of trails. Working with both public and private groups, the OPRHP is involved in conservation, historic preservation, and waterfront revitalization as well. It also conducts the Empire State Games, amateur athletic games with separate competitions for the general public, the disabled, and seniors.
