1833 | The New York Sun. Founded by Benjamin H. Day as a penny daily to feature human interest stories, this newspaper first attracted wide attention with its sensational moon hoax (1835), an article purporting to reveal a discovery by the famous astronomer Sir John Herschel of people and animals on the moon. The paper later merged with the New York Herald (1920) and the World-Telegram (1950), but labor disputes forced the closing of the newspaper in 1966, although a Sunday edition lingered until 1967. |
