A province consisting of the island of Newfoundland and the mainland known as Labrador. British sovereignty was recognized in 1713 and self-government was achieved in 1855. Although Labrador became part of Newfoundland in 1927 it was not until 1949 that Newfoundland finally joined the Canadian Union as its tenth province. At the end of 2001, the name was changed to Newfoundland and Labrador.
