newly agriculturalizing country

Geography Dictionary: newly agriculturalizing country

A term applied by H. Friedmann (New Left Review 197) to less economically developed countries which have begun, since the late 1980s, to produce high-value seafood, and horticultural produce; in 1993 Argentina, Brazil, China, Kenya, and Mexico accounted for over 40% of global trade in high-value horticulture. Competitiveness relies on complementarity to European seasons, low production costs, and the ability to supply goods of the quantity and quality required by European markets.
