Review

A part-time journalist and Radio 1 DJ, Chris Coco forged diverse electronic music from little pieces of weary, warped bass and small and subtle pop. Next Wave, his long-awaited debut, reflects the low warmth of early morning Ibiza, which seems to be the biggest theme throughout "Dreaming," a drolly mid-paced embrace of Orb-influenced strangeness featuring the vocals of author Iain Banks, and "Falling," a sweet touch of melodic guitar/sampler chill-out that sounds like the Cure's "In Between Days" splashing a girl with sea water in a slow-motion ploy for free intercourse. Things fall short of Coco's hopes for a new Screamadelica, but the guests are quality (Rui Da Silva, Monica Queen, Patrick Bergin, Nick Cave) and the music is stripped-down and imaginative. ~ Dean Carlson, Rovi
