Game Description

Battle for the Super Bowl trophy in NFL Football for the Super Nintendo. The game features all 28 NFL teams, each of them rated according to various key categories such as passing and running. You can play a single exhibition game or try your luck in the playoffs. You can let the computer choose weather conditions based on the home team's geographical location, or you can select from sunny, rain or snow.

NFL Football is a game of both strategy and action. In addition to maneuvering the onscreen players, you get to call the plays. Standard mode lists all the plays in the same order for each team. In Team mode, the plays that a given team is likely to use are placed in front of the playbook. Selections are based on the strengths of the team and their coach's style; if you need help, you can have the computer select a play that best fits the current situation. You can run your offense from a shotgun formation, pull a quarterback sneak or choose from a number of more traditional plays. Defensively, you can play zone or man to man.

Other features and options in NFL Football include audibles, interceptions, kickoffs (including onside kicks) and a no-huddle offense. For specials moves you can stiff arm would-be tacklers, dive with the ball, dive for a loose ball, put on a burst of speed, try a spin move and do a high step to get past the guys diving for your legs. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide

Roots & Influences

It is widely believed that the sport of American football, which slowly evolved in the 19th century, is a modification of rugby and soccer. A meeting in Canton, Ohio in 1919 of professional football players led to the advent of the NFL. The first NFL-licensed video game was NFL Football for the Intellivision. ~ Glenn Wigmore, All Game Guide

Wikipedia: NFL Football

NFL Football is a 1989 American football arcade game, developed by LJN and published by Nintendo. This is one of the first to get an official NFL license for the video game. As expected in 8-bit American football games, the controls are simplistic and the graphics rein true to their 8-bit heritage as simple two-dimensional non-rotatable sprites.
