Biography

Nick Massi was an original member of the Four Seasons (performing on some of the band's biggest hits, such as "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man," and "Rag Doll"), supplying the bass vocal parts and helping arrange the band's trademark vocal arrangements. Born Nicholas Macioci in Newark, NJ, on September 19, 1935, Massi honed his singing skills with several bands during his teenage years, before hooking up with the great Frankie Valli in a local band called the Four Lovers. By the early '60s, the band had changed their name to the Four Seasons and by merging doo wop vocals with memorable love songs, the band enjoyed a staggering 17 hits on the Billboard Top 40, touring the world in the process. Fed up with the hectic lifestyle by 1965, Massi left the band. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and 11 years later on Christmas Eve, Massi succumbed to cancer in his hometown of Newark. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Nick Massi (born Nicholas Macioci, September 19, 1935 - December 24, 2000) was the bass singer and bass guitarist for the Four Seasons. He was born in Newark, New Jersey. Some sources list his birth year as 1927.

Massi had been playing with several bands before joining The Four Lovers in 1958. After the group evolved into the Four Seasons, they performed such hits as "Sherry," "Dawn (Go Away)," and "Rag Doll." He was responsible for most of the group's vocal arrangements. Massi left the Four Seasons in 1965 and was replaced temporarily by Charles Calello who in turn was replaced by Joe Long.

Music wasn't Nick's only talent. Some of his paintings can be viewed at http://www.nickmassiart.com/1.html. He was also very talented at billiards.

He succumbed to cancer in 2000 at his home in West Orange, New Jersey. Unfortunately, Massi predeceased the long delayed recognition of the Four Seasons' legacy, as the phenomenal success of their musical biography on Broadway, Jersey Boys did not occur until November 6, 2005.
