The majority of professional darts players now have a sobriquet or nickname, a trend which seemingly began when Eric Bristow, the most successful player in the first few years of the World Championship, played his matches with "The Crafty Cockney" emblazoned on the back of his shirt. When the Professional Darts Corporation circuit started in 1994, it became almost customary for every player to use a nickname which has created characters for its audience to identify.
