(b Toledo, c. 1542; d Toledo, 11 Dec 1606). Architect, sculptor and painter, son of (1) Nicol?s de Vergara (i). Although he succeeded his father as master sculptor and glass painter of Toledo Cathedral, he was especially concerned with architecture. He carved a marble figure of St Eugenius (c. 1575) for the Puerta Nueva de Bisagra, Toledo, and as architect was twice Maestro Mayor of Toledo Cathedral (1575-82 and 1587-1606). He worked first in the later style of Alonso de Covarrubias but then moved closer to the classical manner introduced by Juan de Herrera. He was, however, the most creative and individual of Herrera's followers, both in his treatment of wall surfaces (relying on the Classical orders and reducing the use of entablatures) and in his management of space and light. His most important works are the cloister of S Bernardo (1576), Toledo, the church and sacristy of the Hospital of S Juan Bautista (c. 1576), Tavera, the sacristy of S Pedro M?rtir (1587), Toledo, both the chapel of S Jos? and the church at the Hospital de la Caridad (1588), Illescas, the whole chapel of the Virgen del Sagrario (1591), Toledo Cathedral, the planning of the Plaza Mayor in both Talavera de la Reina and Toledo (1593), the Capilla de las Reliquias (1595) in the monastery of Guadalupe, the parish church of Noblejas (1598), Toledo, and S Pedro M?rtir (1605), Toledo.
