Biography

As Knots Landing's scheming, manipulative vixen Paige Matheson, actress Nicollette Sheridan proved a devilish highlight of 1980s television. Though she had essayed a few small supporting roles in film and television before landing that fateful role, it was Sheridan's icy perfection on Knots Landing that defined her early career. Just as her career seemed to be on the wane with appearances in such B-grade fare as 1999's Raw Nerve and director Jim Wynorski's Lost Treasure, Sheridan surprised television viewers by rising from the ashes to reclaim her former glory by landing the role of fast and loose divorcée Edie Britt on the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives in 2004. Her reborn celebrity status was cemented when the aging actress courted controversy by baring it all (or at least her back) in a steamy Monday Night Football promo.

The granddaughter of revered English actress Dinah Sheridan, Nicollette was born in England and raised in London before later relocating to Los Angeles. In 1984, she made her small-screen debut in the short-lived television series Paper Dolls. The next year, Sheridan gained feature credibility as the object of John Cusack's character's affection in the lightweight romantic comedy The Sure Thing before returning to the tube for a pair of made-for-television features. In 1986, she began an enduring seven-year run on the evening drama Knots Landing, her performance providing the series with some of its most memorable moments. Sheridan's post-Knots Landing career was highlighted by roles in Spy Hard, Beverly Hills Ninja, and a series of made-for-television movies including A Time to Heal and The People Next Door. If it appeared at the dawn of the new millennium that Sheridan would be forever relegated to obscure independent films and little-seen small-screen features, the tireless actress received a healthy career boost when chosen to portray saucy Edie Britt in the surprise ABC hit Desperate Housewives. If this wasn't enough to put Sheridan back in the spotlight, her controversial appearance on a teaser spot for Monday Night Football raised eyebrows when the actress appeared to seduce Philadelphia receiver Terrell Owens by entering the locker room and dropping her bath towel. Just as Janet Jackson had shocked viewers with the Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction" commonly known as "Nipplegate," Sheridan's revealing moment was instantly dubbed "Towelgate" by a salivating press eager to capitalize on the latest controversy. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early life

Sheridan was born in Worthing, West Sussex, England, the daughter of British actress Sally Sheridan (née Adams).[1] She is of Punjabi Indian descent through her maternal side.[2][3] Sheridan's biological father has never been identified. However, Sheridan has said that she considers her mother's late ex-boyfriend, actor Telly Savalas, to be her father (and not stepfather). Sheridan's half-brother, Nick Savalas, is his son. Sheridan attended school at Millfield in Somerset and emigrated to the United States in 1973.[1]

Career

Sheridan made her debut in the short-lived US primetime soap opera Paper Dolls in 1984, but her breakthrough came in 1986, when she joined the cast of the CBS primetime soap Knots Landing as "Paige Matheson". She started out in a recurring role, but was a series regular by the 1988-89 season. For her performance in the role, she won the 1990 Soap Opera Digest Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress: Prime Time" and the 1991 Soap Opera Digest Award for "Outstanding Heroine: Prime Time". The same year, she was named one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People". After the series ended in 1993, she appeared in several made-for-TV movies and the films Spy Hard and Beverly Hills Ninja and auditioned for the role of Grace Adler on Will & Grace (on which she would later guest-star).

In 2004, Sheridan's role as sexy model divorcee Edie Britt in ABC's Desperate Housewives brought her renewed media attention. She was nominated for a 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and was named #48 on Maxim's 2006 List.[4] Less positively, she was named 2004's "worst dressed" by Mr. Blackwell. She commented that: "I'd rather be number one on the worst-dressed list than number two on the best." Blackwell had earlier (TV Guide, July 22, 1989) praised her fashion sense: "daring ... with her panache, she brings it off without a hitch. For the adventurer in all of us, she's the one to watch".

Toward the close of the fourth season of Desperate Housewives, conflicting reports circulated regarding Sheridan's future in her role. While Hollywood.com reported in April that series creator Marc Cherry had said Sheridan would depart at the end of the season,[5] another source stated that Sheridan was confident she would return for the series' fifth season.[6] By May 4, Entertainment Weekly reported that Sheridan would likely make several appearances in the upcoming season, but not necessarily as a regular cast member.[7]

Actress Dana Delany, who plays Katherine Mayfair, confirmed that Nicollette Sheridan would be back to reprise her role for Season 5 of Desperate Housewives,[8][9] and the Hollywood Reporter reported Nicollette's character might be seducing another boyfriend, played by actor Neal McDonough.[10]

When season five aired, Sheridan did indeed reprise her regular role as Edie, now married to McDonough's character.

In February 2009 Sheridan announced her departure from Desperate Housewives. Her exit episode aired in April 2009 when Edie Britt was killed off in the series.[11] According to Sheridan, her character, Edie Britt, died just like she had lived, as the complete and utter center of attention.[12]

Personal life

Sheridan was married to actor Harry Hamlin from 1991 to 1993.

She began seeing Swedish personal trainer, Nicklas Söderblom in 2004 and became engaged to him on New Year's Eve 2004. From January to October 2005, Sheridan and Söderblom were engaged to be married.[13] After their break-up, Sheridan returned to ex-boyfriend Michael Bolton, whom Sheridan had originally met in 1991. After they began seeing each other again, Bolton proposed on holiday in the Bahamas in March 2006. Sheridan was quoted as saying: "It's much sweeter the second time around."[citation needed]

In 2006, Sheridan and Bolton sang a duet titled The Second Time Around for the album Bolton Swings Sinatra.[14][15]

In March 2008, Sheridan posed naked for a London Fog charity ad which also featured Bolton.[16]

It was confirmed on August 26, 2008 that Sheridan and Bolton had broken off their engagement.[17]

As of April 2009, she is dating Steve Pate.[18]
