(b Copenhagen, 24 Aug 1919). Danish composer. He studied at the Copenhagen Conservatory and began teaching there in 1949. Exceedingly prolific, he has cultivated a vigorous style owing something to Nielsen and to the Hindemith of the 1920s, composing in all forms, especially the symphony, concerto, piano sonata and string quartet; his later music uses avant-garde procedures.
