Nihongi

Like the slightly earlier Kojiki (see Kojiki), the Nihongi (“Chronicles of Japan”), published in 720 CE, records the mythological “history” of Japan (see Shinto Mythology, Shinto entries). The myths of the Nihongi are particularly influenced by Chinese thought, which was popular in Japan at the time, and several variants of particular myths are often given, some of them making use of actual Chinese myths.
