Nikolay Baskov was born on October 15, 1976 in Moscow. In 2001 he graduated from Russian Gnesin Academy of Music specializing in chamber and opera singing (professors V. Levko and V. Shcherbatov class) and after that entered post graduate school of Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (professor P. Skusnichenko class) which he finished with the Gold Medal in 2003. He also took vocal classes with the Honored Artist of Russia L. Shehova for several years.
After winning the Russian National Young Singers Contest (First Prize, 1998) and Grande Voce Contest (Second Prize, Spain, 1999) at a very young age, Baskov received a proposal from Russian Bolshoi Theatre to perform Lenskiy part in the opera ‛Eugeny Onegin‛ by P.I Tchaikovsky in 1998. He was the youngest Lenskiy in the history of world opera. That was a breathtaking start for a young artist. His opera portfolio includes such parts as Vladimir Igorevich in ‛Prince Igor‛ by A. Borodin, Yurodiviy in ‛Boris Godunov‛ by M. Musorgskiy, Izmail in ‛Nabucco‛ by D. Verdi, Alfred in ‛Traviata‛ by D. Verdi, Spakos in ‛Cleopatra‛ by J. Massne, Cavaradossi in ‛Tosca‛ by G. Puccini etc..
In 2000 a video for the song ‛In Memory of Caruso‛ was shot and that became a huge hit in Russia taking top positions in TV and radio charts. Baskov’s audience was no longer limited by the academic concert halls from that time and he won recognition and army of fans on national scope. His records sold millions of copies. So far he is the only artist in Russia performing both in crossover and pop music styles. His songs take leading positions in charts and his videos are on prestigious and popular channels MUZ TV and MTV. He has received such national music awards as ‛Ovation‛, ‛Zolotoy Gramofon‛, ‛MUZ TV‛, ‛Style of the Year‛, ‛Singer of the Year‛ many times.
Year 2000 was marked by a very important event that changed his life – he met the legend of world opera, the Great Soprano of 20th century Montserrat Caballe. After a number of joint performances Mrs. Caballe proposed Nikolay to take regular vocal classes with her to inhance his skills. That was a crucial point in his life. From a great variety of artists Mrs. Caballe chose him and nowadays he is her only pupil and partner on stage. Their voices were heard together on the best opera stages in Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and other countries of the world. The foreign newspapers wrote many times about the unique sound colour of his voice, brilliant vocal skills and technique, wide voice range, his style and artistic skills that make Nilkolay so different from others.
Nikolay Baskov is the Honored Artist of Russia and People’s Artist of Ukraine. He is awarded with the top rank Belorussian National F. Skorina Medal, Gold Medal of Peace Fund (for charity and peace promoting activities). He is the holder of the title ‛Gold Voice of Russia‛. The artist’s biography is unique.
