Born in Nalgonda District vemulapally mandal chirumarthy village in Andhra Pradesh.[3] He is the eldest son of Nimmala Guruvaiah and Nimmala Sakkubayamma. He is a director who made revolutionary movies like sriramulayya,encounter,jayam manadera and jai bolo telangana. His movie jai bolo telangana was nominated to be screened at south asian film festival at goa which starts from september 15,2011.

N. Shankar’s films have won Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards, A.P. Cinegoer’s Association Annual Awards, Manikchand Film Fare Awards, Bharatamuni Awards etc.
N. Shankar was also elected to be a member in the Jury for the 51st National Film Awards for 2003.
Jayam Manade Raa won two Nandi Awards for the year 2000 for Best Supporting Actress – Jhansi and Best Villain - Jayaprakash Reddy. Also, for Jayam Manade Raa, Venkatesh won the Filmfare Best Actor Award. ss
