Nine Days

Final stage of public mourning for the Temple's destruction which commences on the fast of Shivah Asar Be-Tammuz. During the three week period extending from 17 Tammuz until the day after 9 Av (Tishah Be-Av), observant Ashkenazim practice various Mourning customs, avoid places of entertainment, and do not celebrate marriages (see Three Weeks). As from the first (New Moon) of Av, these restrictions are intensified and, until the afternoon of the tenth, Ashkenazim forgo meat and wine except on the Sabbath or at a Siyyum celebration marking the completion of study of a talmudic tractate. Many Orthodox Jews refrain from washing clothes and wearing new or elegant attire during this period. In general, Western Sephardi practice throughout the Three Weeks is close to that of Ashkenazim. Other Oriental communities, however, only ban weddings and avoid haircuts during the first ten days of Av, but there are numerous variations in their practice. Most non-Ashkenazim limit their abstention from meat, wine, haircuts, and shaving to the week in which the Tishah be-Av fast day actually occurs.

Biography

Nine Days was formed on Long Island by singer/songwriter/guitarists John Hampson and Brian Desveaux, who had previously played together and apart in a series of local groups. The band was filled out by keyboard player Jeremy Dean, bass player Nick Dimichino, and drummer Vincent Tattanelli. Focusing on their songwriting and shared lead vocals, Hampson and Desveaux holed up in Hampson's apartment in Deer Park woodshedding, then released their own debut album and began playing live shows. They won WBAB's Homegrown Talent Search and WLIR's Best Unsigned Band competition, made a second CD on their own, and finally signed to Epic/550 Music, which released their debut major-label album, The Madding Crowd (its title a comment on Thomas Hardy's novel Far from the Madding Crowd) in May 2000. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Nine Days is a rock / power pop band which was popular in the early 2000s. Formed on Oyster Bay, New York by John Hampson and Brian Desveaux, they released three independent albums in the 1990s before their mainstream debut album, The Madding Crowd, was released in 2000. The band scored two hits in the US from The Madding Crowd, as "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)", which reached #6 and "If I Am", which reached #68.

A mainstream second album, So Happily Unsatisfied, was scheduled for release in 2003. Unfortunately, due to complications with their record label, Sony, the album was never actually released as the band was no longer in possession of the rights of the songs. In 2006, Nine Days' official website updated with a statement that the album would finally see an actual release, but no other specifics were given.

After the split with Sony, the band released another album under their own record label. The album, titled Flying The Corporate Jet, can be purchased at the bands' website. There have also been a number of other Nine Days albums that are available for free and legal download from [1].

Although the band is for the most part still together and occasionally performs shows, both vocal artists, John Hampson and Brian Desveaux, have pursued solo careers and their music is available for purchase from their websites, [2] and [3] respectively.

In mid-August 2006, Nine Days reunited and went back to the studio to record.[1] Slow Motion Life (Part One), a new EP with 6 songs, was released on January 19, 2007, and is available from their website or iTunes. New album is to be announced for release. Nine Days will be performing a charity show for Wantagh S.O.S (Save Our Students), A group to help Wantagh students get sports back after the budget was voted down.

Hampson is currently working on a follow-up full-length solo album. The album has been promised for the past three years, with the release date being pushed back repeatedly due to Hampson's busy schedule juggling school, family, and music. However, Hampson does have copies of this album on hand at concerts, so the release date is approaching. Hampson continues to do live shows (both solo and with Nine Days) and post on the Nine Days message board through his website. A few demos of the upcoming album are on the internet for legal download, along with unreleased music by Nine Days and Brian Desveaux, bandmate of Nine Days. Hampson works as an English teacher with his wife, who is an Italian teacher, at Wantagh High School, on Long Island, NY.
