ninety-five per cent rule

Sports Science and Medicine: ninety-five per cent rule

The rule that an athlete recovering from an injury should not return to full activity until he or she has regained at least 95% of the function in the injured part. Assessment of function is usually based on a comparison of the injured part (e.g. right ankle) with its opposing uninjured part (e.g. left ankle). This assumes that the two parts had equivalent pre-injury functions.
