The KA engines are cast iron blocks topped with aluminum heads. When used in the passenger cars both used a crank girdle as opposed to individual caps. In the Hardbody and Frontier applications a crank girdle was not used. The KA24E was a SOHC 12-valve engine produced from July 1988 through January 1996. It uses SEFI fuel injection, and features forged steel connecting rods, an internally balanced forged steel crankshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.

KA24DE
The 2.4 L (2389 cc) KA24DE was used in many Nissan cars and trucks. Most KA24DEs bound for the US were built in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes, with the exceptions of the 240SX and 1994-97 Altima (rebadged Bluebird SSS), which were manufactured in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and the U13 Bluebird released in Australia with FWD configuration. The KA24DE is very similar to the KA24E. The only major change is the head design. The KA24E has a Single-Overhead Cam with 3 valves per cylinder, and the KA24DE has Dual-Overhead Cams with 4 valves per cylinder(shim-over-bucket design). Other design improvements include the use of a knock sensor, oil injection at the base of each piston, and top-firing spark plugs. In addition to the increased power and torque, the KA24DE has a slightly wider power band than the KA24E. These engines have also been proven to be quite tough. In turbocharged form with stock long block 500+ whp has been achieved but short lived and 1000+ whp fully built. There are a plethora of stock block 300+ whp daily driven KA24DE-T's. This engine has pushed into the 7 seconds in the 1/4 mile in some Nissan 240SX's. With their large stroke these engines are known for being low revving torque "monsters" considering the torque numbers have been known to stay with or even higher than hp output.[citation needed]

KA24E+T & KA24DE+T
Aftermarket turbocharger kits are available for the KA24DE as well as many other Nissan engines. After the engine is turbocharged, it is generally referred to as a KA24DET. The KA24DET was never produced by Nissan. The "T" at the end of the engine code indicates that the engine is turbocharged. More information on this subject can be found at www.ka-t.org
KA24DE-R or KA24DER
The KA24DER is not a Nissan production engine. It is a KA24DE with a supercharger on it. Kits may be available but not likely. This modification is normally all custom made in house. The most typical supercharger used is a roots style eaton m62 from a nismo xterra/frontier and m90's on occasion. Again more information is available ka-t.org in the supercharged KA24DE section.
