nitrification

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

the process by which certain soil bacteria (nitrifying bacteria) oxidize ammonium ions in decomposing organic material into nitrate ions. Nitrosomonas spp. first convert ammonium to nitrite, and Nitrobacter spp. then oxidize nitrite to nitrate. Most higher plants can assimilate nitrate much more readily than they can ammonium. Compare denitrification.
