Noël Béda

Béda, Noël (d. 1536). A syndic at the Sorbonne and one of the foremost critics of humanists like Erasmus (whom he accused of exceeding his competence when applying humanist learning to the scriptures) and of the Meaux group [see Evangelicals]. Having questioned the orthodoxy of Marguerite de Navarre he was banished by François I er. He was also ridiculed by Rabelais in the Bibliothèque de Saint-Victor (Pantagruel).
