The doctrine of "manifest destiny" was the rationalization used by Europeans to support their efforts to bring about the extinction of Native populations in North America. Similar beliefs led to the later near-extermination of the Aboriginal populations of Australia. This earnest Dutch documentary explores the present-day predicament of the small remaining number of Aborigines in Australia (just over 100,000), who are unable to either fully join modern Australian society or resume their ancient way of life. The film contains interviews with Aborigines in both the "Abo" slum of Redfern in Sydney and the "Aboriginal preserves" in the Gibson desert. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
