Stock issued with no stated value on the stock certificate. At one time new issues of stock were made as par value, but this practice was abandoned when states began to tax corporations based on par values. At present, par value is arbitrarily set as a low value with no-par stock preferred when allowed by state law. In accounting for stock issues the par value is carried as a separate item with the balance of stock issue proceeds carried as capital surplus.
