Heroica Nogales, more commonly known as Nogales, is a city and its surrounding municipality on the northern border of the Mexican State of Sonora. The municipality covers an area of 1,675 km², and borders to the north the city of Nogales, Arizona, United States, across the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2000, the census reported that Nogales had a population of 159,103 people, representing approximately 50% growth from 1990. According to some sources, the real population was then about 250,000. By the 2005 census the official population of the city was 189,759, and that of the municipality was 193,517. The city and the municipality both rank third in the state in population, after Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregón/Cajeme. The municipality includes many outlying but small rural communities. Nogales is served by Nogales International Airport.

The population growth is in part due to the influx of industry that has come since the opening of the maquiladora industry through the National Industrialization Program, decades before NAFTA. Manufacturing now accounts for 55% of the city's gross domestic product, and services are growing as well.

Nogales officially became a municipality on July 11, 1884, date of the publication of Law No. 29, which had been signed the previous day by the then Governor of Sonora, Luis Emeterio Torres. Nogales was declared a city on January 1, 1920.

Nogales is known for its recent enormous population growth which covers the hills along the central narrow valley that extends from South to North. Dispersed among the houses, the visitor will find a mixture of factories, stores, etc. However, recently, the southern half of the city has experienced a modern urbanization development which includes shopping malls, wide avenues, and modern house conglomerate.

Tourism

Because of its localization Nogales is one of the most important entries of American tourism. One of the best attractions of the city is the temple of the “Sagrado corazón de Jesús” which was built by the XX century. However there are a considerable number of bares and night clubs, 17 hotels, restaurants, handicraft stores and malls that offer a big amount of merchandise. In more than a hundred of stores you can find handicrafts, leather art, clothes. What you shouldn’t miss is to try the incredible northern food such as burritos of machaca meat, menudo, tamales and many other delicious dishes. City of Nogales. Municipio de Nogales Official Site.

Economy

Its infrastructure of communication is the federal road No. 15 which links the state with the U.S. Its economy it is based in the tourism, livestock, industry and commerce. If you visit Nogales you can find excellent hotels, restaurants, bares, hospitals, drug stores, malls and many other establishments. Livestock- What it is strong in the economy is the exportation products, and the cattle breeding. Industry- The most important activity is the foreign export industry, operating a total of 92 establishments of which 65 are located in seven industrial parks, in which is a plant of 25 000 400 workers. Escobarista’s Rebellion

On March of 1929 explode Escobarista’s rebellion, sponsored by a lot of old obregonistas. At the begin of the month, the Gral. Manuel Aguirre, commanding by 64 regiment, got the empower without shoot. In revenge the federal powers from Naco send an airplane to attack to the rebels and with that action create the renovator revolution falling down some booms over Nogales without any damage. The people who empower the town answer with some shot machine guns from the roof , whit any damage to the airplanes. The was only one dead and it was cause by a heart attack, scared by the bomb explosion. At the same month a men covered with a hood appeared in the night driving a tank in the Morley street of the neighbor population, entering Mexico in the exit of the border. Next day these men begin to help to the federals in Naco. It seems that the tank was bought in 1927 for fighting the Yanquis, but the officials of the USA boorder prohibit to exit of United Stated and was kept in a warehouse in Nogales Arizona.
