(electronics) A circuit that blocks the audio-frequency amplifier of a radio receiver automatically when no carrier is being received, to eliminate background noise. Also known as squelch circuit. A circuit that reduces record surface noise when playing phonograph records, generally by means of a filter that blocks out the higher frequencies where such noise predominates. noise limiter
