Of or relating to the study or discovery of general scientific laws that apply not simply to one situation, but to a great many. Much research in sport psychology is aimed at acquiring knowledge that is widely applicable. Examples of nomothetic conceptions are social facilitation, reversal theory, and the Yerkes-Dodson law.
