noncompetitive antagonism

(in pharmacology) the phenomenon occurring when agonist and antagonist can be bound simultaneously, in which antagonist binding reduces or prevents the action of the agonist; e.g. channel block of the nicotinic receptor, or inhibition by adrenoceptor antagonists of the response to tyramine.
