Nordrhein-Westfalen

 

Nordrhein-Westfalen, a constituent Land of the Federal Republic (see Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Created by the British occupation forces in 1946, it consists of the former Prussian territory by the Rhine (Rheinprovinz, see Preussen), Westphalia (see Westfalen), and Lippe. Its capital Düsseldorf and Cologne (see Köln) are the largest cities of this most densely populated German state which includes the industrial Ruhr district. Other cities include Bonn, Aachen, Bielefeld, Bochum, Duisburg, Dortmund, and Essen.
