Review

Christopher Young's smoky, jazz-inspired score to the 1996 HBO biopic Norma Jean and Marilyn captures the sexuality and sophistication of subject Marilyn Monroe in ravishing detail. Employing soprano saxophone to potently romantic effect, Young evokes the sultry atmosphere of Monroe's larger-than-life persona without resorting to parody or cheap titillation. More intimate themes like "Multiple Parents" are no less impressive, introducing a small string ensemble to underscore the melancholy that permeated the actress' life. Even without lyrics, Young's dark, sensitive melodies speak volumes about the mythology and the reality of Marilyn Monroe. A powerful, sadly underrated effort. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
