(b Birmingham, 23 March 1933). English baritone. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy and sang widely in West Germany, 1960-67. His London début, as Sachs with the Sadler's Wells company in 1968, established him as a Wagnerian of international stature (his Sachs, Gunther and Amfortas have been heard at Bayreuth). His clear declamation and strong musical intelligence have also been admired in Mozart, Verdi and Strauss.
