North America

Place Names: North America
The northern half of the American landmass, that is, north of the isthmus of Panama. The first known name, Markland 'Land of Forests', was coined by Leif Eriksson, a Norse leader, c.1000 and probably referred to the coast of what is now southern Labrador. Certainly, the remains of a Norse settlement have been found at L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland. Also mentioned was Vinland 'Land of Wine', but because grapes cannnot possibly grow this far north, the name may have referred to Nova Scotia, Maine, or Massachusetts. Perhaps the 'grapes' the Vikings saw were not grapes at all, but berries of some kind.
