North Branch Correctional Institution (NBCI) is a high-tech, maximum security prison operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services in unincorporated Allegany County, Maryland, near Cumberland.[1] The prison houses the most serious offenders within the State of Maryland.[2] NBCI opened in January 2003 and the final housing unit began operation in the summer of 2008.[3] The prison was featured on National Geographic's Mega-Structures, and is considered one of the most secure prisons in the United States.
The current warden is Bobby P. Shearin, who has over 35 years of experience in corrections.
NBCI prison began housing male death row, maximum and medium security inmates, who were moved from the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center, and Jessup Men's Correctional Institution Annex in June 2010. Inmates are co-mingled within this facility. [4]
