Northamptonshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England.

The force area amounts to 914 square miles (2,370 km2) and has a resident population of 642,708. The force is divided into two basic command units (BCUs), Northamptonshire West and Northamptonshire North, each headed by a Chief Superintendent. Police officer strength amounts to 1400 officers.

The position of Chief Constable is temporarily being held by the current Deputy Chief Constable, Davina Logan. DCC Logans place will be temporarily taken by the current ACC Derek Talbot. This arrangement will remain in place until the newly appointed Chief Constable Adrian Lee takes up office. Mr Lee's appointment followed a national recruitment campaign and a rigorous and demanding process, including a workshop with community representatives.

Northamptonshire Police Authority has 9 councillors, 3 justices of the peace, and 5 independent members.

History

Northamptonshire Constabulary was formed in 1840. On 1 April 1966 it merged with Northampton Borough Police to form Northampton and County Constabulary, becoming Northamptonshire Constabulary again from 1 January 1975. [ref] contributor's service in N&CC from 9/67 to 2/75.

In 1965, Northamptonshire Constabulary had an establishment of 442 officers and an actual strength of 387.[1]

Proposals made by the Home Secretary on March 20, 2006 would have seen the force merge with the other four East Midlands forces to form a strategic police force for the entire region.[2] These proposals were later shelved.
