Review

A little more mainstream than most Northern soul compilations. A few of these songs made Billboard and Cashbox's R&B chart, like Darrell Banks' "Open the Door to Your Heart," Donnie Elbert's "A Little Piece of Leather," the Olympics' "Baby Do the Philly Dog," and Bobby Womack's "What Is This." There are also plenty of rarities, like Connie Clark's "My Sugar Baby," Bob Relf's "Blowing My Mind to Pieces," Jackie Lee's "Oh My Darlin'," and, maybe the rarest cut here, "Double Cookin' (Strings-A-Go-Go)," by the Checkerboard Squares. The title "classics" will be misleading to some, but if you knew about the genre, you would consider the name apropos. ~ Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
