New Zealand winegrowing region located in the far north of the North Island near the towns of Kaitaia and Whangarei. The southernmost point at Whangarei is about 115 miles north of the city of Auckland. Although vines were planted here in 1819, making Northland the birthplace of New Zealand viticulture, the region's winemaking nearly vanished until a strong viticulture resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s. The region's warmth, humidity (from heavy rains), and rich soils encourage large yields. Careful site selection and good crop management programs are required to produce excellent wines. When managed properly cabernet sauvignon, merlot Shiraz (syrah), and chardonnay can produce high-quality wines.
