Northside is a neighborhood in Syracuse, New York (USA) consisting of a residential area bordered by commercial corridors. The residential area is predominantly single and two-family homes. Court Street, Grant Boulevard, and Butternut Street contain the primary commercial blocks in this neighborhood. Most businesses are locally oriented and cater to the needs of neighborhood residents, including restaurants, drug stores, and small professional offices. Schiller Park, one the city's largest parks, is located within the area. This area is a high crime area with many of the residents collecting social security disability, welfare or having low wage jobs. A good portion of the population under 30 is on parole or probation. Butternut streets is one of the main streets in the area and is not safe to traverse after dark as many shootings and robberies have occurred here. In a three week period in the fall of 2009 900 individuals were arrested on the Northside according to the police chief Miguel.
