Term used in the 18th century for a Serenade to be performed late at night. Mozart used it as a title for his Serenata notturnak 239 and his Notturno k 286/269 a and Haydn for his eight notturnos of 1790. Several chamber works in two movements were published as notturnos, for example J. C. Bach's op.2 string trios.
