'New Castles' from zámok 'castle'. A castle built to provide protection against the Ottoman Turks, the previous names have more or less the same meaning. Olah was a local archbishop with Ersekujvar meaning 'Archbishop's New Castle'. The present name was adopted in the 18th century.
