NPS Pharmaceuticals' calcium receptor technology is the launching point for its development of treatments for hyperparathyroidism (HPT) and osteoporosis. The company worked with Amgen and the pharmaceutical unit of Kirin Brewery to develop Sensipar, which targets secondary HPT, a disease in which the overproduction of parathyroid hormone causes a calcium imbalance. Amgen sells the drug everywhere but Japan, where Kirin owns the marketing rights. NPS has two other compounds in late-stage clinical trials: osteoporosis drug Preos (already approved in Europe) and recombinant protein Gattex, a potential treatment for gastrointestinal disorders. Swiss firm Nycomed has European marketing rights for both drugs.
