(b Lisbon, 30 Jan 1922). Portuguese architect. He graduated from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon in 1948 and came to prominence in the late 1940s for his innovative designs and for his political activity in the cause of social enlightenment and the status of architecture. For example, after playing an active role in the Congresso Nacional de Arquitectura, Lisbon (1948), he later took part in the national survey of vernacular architecture in Portugal (1956-61). Early work included the church of das ?guas (1950-52), Penamacor, which made use of local materials and ignored both the academic and historicist trends still prevailing at that time and the Rationalism then in vogue. He also worked extensively in collective housing projects, including the ?guas Livres block (1953-5; with Bartolomeu Costa Cabral), Amoreiras, Lisbon; Caixas de Previd?ncia (1958), Barcelos; the residential block (1959; with Pinto Freitas; Valm?r prize 1967) at 55-55A Rua General Silva Freire, Olivais, Lisbon; and the EPUL estate (1972-87 and 1990s; with Nuno Portas, Jo?o Paci?ncia (b 1943) and Pedro Botelho (b 1948)), Restelo, Lisbon. In these projects he moved from the influence of Italian realism in the 1950s to purist experiments in the 1970s. He also made important contributions with designs for social, religious and commercial projects, for example in the 'Franjinhas' building (1965-7; with Jo?o Braula Reis (1927-90)), 40 Rua Castilho, Lisbon, and the church of Sagrado Cora??o de Jesus (1962-70; with Portas), Rua Camillo Castelo Branco, Lisbon; both of these won Valm?r prizes in 1971 and 1975 respectively. He also produced notable buildings in southern Portugal at Vila Vi?osa (1957-9) and Sesimbra (1960-62; both with Portas). He received an award from the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art in 1985.
