Review

Nut is a two-CD set that marked Cyrus Chestnut's 1992 debut as a leader, though it was originally recorded in the U.S. for release in Japan as two separate CDs. Joined by two equally talented young lions, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, he covers a wide mix of standards, including a light, swinging version of Massenet's "Elegie," and a tense "Caravan," and a sparkling miniature of "Duke's Place" (the instrumental version is properly called "C Jam Blues"). His originals "Sweet Potato Pie and Kool Aid" and "Jazzmine's Island" should stand the test of time, too. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
