The United States Tag Team Championship was abandoned on July 31, 1992. Unusually, the title's retirement was explicitly worked into storylines, with the Fabulous Freebirds (the champions at the time the decision was announced) looking for the "honor" of being the last team to hold the title. In the last-ever US Tag Team title match in WCW on June 25, 1992, the Freebirds dropped the belts to the makeshift team of Dick Slater and The Barbarian.
In 1996, the title was revived in Dennis Coralluzzo's NWA Championship Wrestling America/New Jersey. However, while still a "national" title in name, it wasn't defended in various NWA promotions across the country as its counter part, the NWA North American Tag Team Championship was and currently is today. It was relegated to serve, instead, as a regional champtionshpi defended only in Coralluzzo's promotion before being abandoned in 2000.
