  (nērĕd-yə-) pronunciation

A city of northeast Hungary north of Debrecen. Inhabited since the 13th century, it was destroyed by the Turks in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. Population: 116,000.

(nyē'rĕjhä') , city (1991 est. pop. 114,596), NE Hungary. It is a county administrative center, a road and rail junction, and the market for an extensive agricultural region. Light industries include canning, distilling, and food processing. Known in the 13th cent., the city was destroyed during the Turkish occupation (16th cent.) of Hungary but was rebuilt in the 18th cent. Its museum contains gold relics dating from Avar times.
