  • Release Year: 1970
  • Run Time: 83 minutes

Plot

This entertaining character study by Greek writer/director Markos Malliarakis casts Sotiris Moustakas as Miltos, a starving artist whose debts and soured ambitions place him firmly in the clutches of a scheming maid named Poppi (Maria Bonellou). Poppi wants to convince Miltos to marry her, because she believes that he has secretly inherited a good deal of money. Miltos, however, is in love with Litsa (Miranda Zafiropoulou), the daughter of a saloon-owner who is determined that Litsa should have a wealthy husband. Litsa almost leaves Miltos when she comes to believe that he is in love with Poppi, while Poppi finally gives up on him after realizing that he is dirt-poor. Things seem to be going from bad to worse for the struggling painter, but fortune smiles upon him when his artistic talents finally begin to be appreciated and earn him some money. With Poppi out of the way and the cash finally rolling in, Miltos can marry Litsa with her father's blessings and be happy at last. A predictable story, but warmly told and engagingly played by a cast which also includes Kostas Mentis, Petros Yiannakos, and Nota Paroussi. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
