O Apostatis

  • Director: Phaedon Yeorgitsis
  • Genre: Drama
  • Movie Type: Psychological Thriller
  • Themes: Dangerous Friends
  • Release Year: 1974
  • Run Time: 99 minutes

Plot

Phaedon Yeorgitsis wrote, directed, and stars in this wicked Greek melodrama prescient of both Bad Influence and The Talented Mr. Ripley in its exploration of the ways in which a determined sociopath can invade another person's life. After ten years abroad, the insecure and slightly mad Loukas (Yeorgitsis) comes back to Greece and runs into his old friend, a writer named Drakos (Minas Christidis), who is depressed and vulnerable following several bad breaks. Seeing an opportunity, Loukas insinuates himself into Drakos' life, taking his place at social functions and basically taking over the writer's identity, all in the guise of friendship. The expected psychological nightmares ensue, and Yeorgitis handles both the direction and the lead role with aplomb, aided by a veteran supporting cast including Anna Fonsou, Kostas Papachristos, and Lavrentis Dianellos. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
