This full original version was written by the French side Catholic Father Gerard Kemps in 1958.

Because of the message the lyrics conveyed and the melody that carried the tune, it served the purpose of a national song. Father Kemps had been inspired by the great beauty of the island and it's cool way of life.
In 1980, as a catholic priest he was in charge of the Grand-Case church.
In 1984, on the occasion of the Queen Beatrix's Birthday, Father Kemps was knighted Ridder of the "Order of Orange-Nassau".
Although there are some now on St. Martin who are unaware of Father Kemps,[citation needed] his legacy lives on in the St. Martin's song.
Hereafter : The various lyrics of the O Sweet Saint Martin's Land song (in English, French and Dutch).
