Considered by many as the greatest samba composer of all time, Paulinho Da Viola has an extremely rich catalog from a career spanning five decades. Since he emerged as a recording artist during the mid-'60s, Da Viola has enchanted the public and served as a source of inspiration for innumerable other artists. Few have managed to mix elegant sophistication, both in terms of lyrics and melody, with the typical raw, rhythmical energy of samba as well as Da Viola. Many of his compositions are now part of the general Brazilian culture heritage. This collection contains several of his classics. The popular and often re-recorded "Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida" and "Guardei Minha Viola," the sad and beautiful "Dança da Solidão" and the harmonious and soothing "Para Ver as Meninas" and "Num Samba Curto" are all quintessential masterpieces. There are also excellent examples of Da Viola as an interpreter of other samba composers' work, such as the elegant "Nervos de Aço" by Lupicínio Rodrigues. ~ Philip Jandovský, Rovi
