octave-band analyzer

(engineering acoustics) A portable sound analyzer which amplifies a microphone signal, feeds it into one of several band-pass filters selected by a switch, and indicates the magnitude of sound in the corresponding frequency band on a logarithmic scale; all the bands except the highest and lowest span an octave in frequency. Abbreviated OBA.


An electronic instrument for measuring octave-band sound-pressure level; consists of a microphone, amplifier, electric filters, an indicator, and appropriate controls.
