"I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members" and "Who's on first?" are two quotes that bring up some of the funniest names in show business. Groucho Marx said the first. Abbott and Costello tried to give the answer to the second. Groucho was born on this date in 1890; Bud Abbott — the tall straight man to Costello's clown — was born on this date in 1897. After Abbott's death, Groucho called him "the greatest straight man ever." The eyebrow-waggling, mustachioed Groucho alternated between his role as wisecracking, acerbic wit and straight man to his brothers. More from Groucho: "I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it."
