The largest island in the North Land group, it was named in 1931 after the Bolshevik October Revolution in 1917. This took place on 24–5 October at a time when Russia was using the Julian calendar. In 1918 the Gregorian calendar was adopted in Russia and this had the effect of advancing the date of the Revolution to 7 November.
