Odd Man Out is short-lived American sitcom that aired on the ABC television network as apart of the TGIF lineup. It aired from September 24, 1999 to January 7, 2000.
Set in Miami, the show revolved around fifteen-year-old Andrew Whitney, the only male in a house full of females. He is constantly surrounded by his three sisters (Val, Paige, and Elizabeth), Aunt Jordan, and single mom, Julia. The episodes mostly revolved around Andrew's lack of privacy and dealing with his best friend Keith's crush on his unresponsive older sister, Val.
The show was heavily promoted in the summer of 1999. ABC commercials showing teenage girls screaming "EVD!" (the initials of star Erik von Detten) were prominent; at the time, this was the peak of the boy band craze, and this was a common practice. The commercials mentioned very little about the show itself, and did not even mention the name until a few weeks before the show was to debut: a typical advertisement, following clips of girls screaming "EVD!" would follow a shadow of von Detton with a question mark and a voiceover stating "What is EVD? Find out Fridays this fall on ABC." This type of mysterious promotion did little to hold interest in the show once it debuted.
The general theme of the show being a re-hash of so many before, that of one gender mixed in among so many of the other gender, and it being a gender-oriented show which had already become politically in-correct with so many in the television industry management circles; its doom was inevitable.
This show should not be confused with the 1 season episode of UK TV's own Odd Man Out of 1977 which starred the ever popular John Inman of Are You Being Served and Grace and Favour fame. Inman's show was done in front of a live audience, using an original theme for its time, pioneered many themes and characterizations that later became important study for all situation comedy writers and actors. Unlike American sitcoms in which a one year run indicates failure, Inman's show was crafted for one specific season open on his personal schedule. The single season for this show was a tremendous hit and went into immediate re-runs.
