or off-line (ôf'līn', ŏf'-) pronunciation
adj.
  1. Not under the control of a central computer, as in a manufacturing process or experiment.
  2. Not connected to a computer or computer network.

Computer system that does not allow the user direct access to the mainframe or stored files. Typically, information is stored on magnetic tape and must be loaded onto the mainframe before information can be retrieved. New data entered to the system accumulates in temporary storage until a file update can be run that merges the new data into the existing file. For example, in a fulfillment environment, data entry information concerning orders, renewals, customer account adjustments, or payments is entered to a transaction bank and allowed to accumulate until an update is run. The update applies all of these transactions to the old file, thus creating a new file. From this updated file, output such as mailing labels, invoices, or list rental selections can be generated. Off-line systems use central processing unit time more efficiently than on-line systems and are therefore more economical, but they do not offer the advantage of instant input and retrieval of information.

Not connected. A printer is offline when it does not have an active connection to the computer; Internet users can download mail and newsgroup messages and work offline, that is, not connected to their ISP.
